2018 has started with a bang! So much is happening but we also want to take a moment to reflect on our impact of 2017. Checkout below to keep up to date with the happenings of CYC and also checkout the difference we are making in our community.
We’ve had the privilege as youth workers to attend Whangaparaoa Colleges annual year 13 camp as part of the school staff who help run the activities. We were asked if we could organize some leadership development activities for a few hours after dinner. This was an amazing opportunity for Kayana, Ash and I to input significantly into 60 odd young people and also achieve one of our core pillars of 24-7 youth working. A part of this leadership development was to have each group form their own mission statement. To develop these statements we created a safe forum for the 17 – 18 year old students to speak freely about the local area, community, school and personal values. We learned some profound insights into their beliefs, confusions, dislikes and passions. We were also shocked to learn that many of these young people feel unheard or de-valued by adults. We encouraged them to use what they know, being they are a generation with more tools than ever before to communicate. One key thing I learnt is that not just listening, but hearing what a young person has to say is extremely important to them, and I would suggest it is not just those about to finish their school life but any young person wanting to share their opinions and ideas.
Chandra Newman has come on-board as our new administrator and is doing a brilliant job. Coming from many years in the corporate job scene, Chandra brings a wealth of experience and professionalism to the trust. We are incredibly excited to have her on-board.
